Volunteer at Austin Guinea Pig Rescue

PLEASE NOTE:
Austin Guinea Pig Rescue is a very small organization with no staff. This means we rely solely on the fosterers and volunteers who generously provide their time and support to achieve our goals. Our main officers usually take responsibility for collecting our rescued animals from local shelters, and taking them to the vet when needed, but there are many other things YOU could help with, such as...

... assisting at fundraising events
We sometimes have fundraising events where help is always appreciated. At this event, we usually have someone going round selling raffle tickets, a couple of people of our information booth, someone else selling donated items, etc. We don't have any dates for upcoming events yet - watch this space though!

... becoming a nail-clipping assistant
Guinea pigs need their nails trimmed every six weeks or so, and this is a job that is SO much easier if it is performed by two people. While one person holds the animal still (i.e., you), the other (i.e., one of us) can give the guinea pig his/her mani-pedi treatment.

... helping with rabbit grooming
Our rabbits (and the occasional long-haired guinea pigs we sometimes get) require regular hair brushing so their gorgeous tresses don't get matted. Prepare yourself to be covered in hair head to toe! Luckily, we have sticky rollers at bay, and the experience makes up for it anyway!

... cleaning cages at the rescue site
Every weekend, all cages are spring cleaned! This involves emptying the cages of dirty wood shavings and wiping them clean, adding new wood shavings to the cages, wiping all igloos and bowls, and spring cleaning and refilling all water bottles.

... helping secure grants
We need people you can search for grants we could be eligible form, and help us complete these applications. This is a time-consuming task, and we don't get a chance to do it as often as we should. We're a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, so there is plenty of funding opportunities out there that we could take advantage of. This is something you could do from the comfort of your own home!

... assisting at adoption/information events
We also sometimes do adoption/information events to raise awareness of Austin Guinea Pig Rescue, and to educate the public about responsible small animal care. These events are usually on the weekend and last about four hours, although you could do shorter shifts if needed.

... becoming a small animal socializer
Our rescued animals have often suffered neglect and/or gone through traumatic experiences, so they are often scared and try to avoid human contact. This is why the work our fosterers perform is so valuable, because it helps these animals begin to trust and enjoy human interaction, which increases their chances of being adopted. But you can also help as a volunteer! Instead of taking an animal longer-term, like a fosterer might do, you can become an AGPR small animal socializer and take one small animal home with you for 1-2 weeks at a time, then drop them off and get another one that is on the to-be-socialized list.

One of our officers will contact you at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your interest and generosity! NOTE: While there is no age limit on volunteering, we require that all children be directly supervised by their parents at all times.  Anyone who tries to open cages without permission, or tries to remove animals from their cages will be asked to leave.  Some animals are nocturnal and don't wish to be bothered during the day, and some of the animals are elderly or sick and it would be detrimental to their health.
